Walter Eugene Mc Clanahan was born in Norfolk, Nebraska, on March 1, 1928, to Mr. and Mrs. Walter McClanahan. He was an only child and was “received into the membership of the Methodist church at Allen, Nebraska,” but later moved to South Dakota, and graduated Tyndall High School in 1946. Walter married Mary Jane Smith of Springfield on September 11, 1950. Walter and Mary Jane had one daughter, Sharon Louise.

Walter Eugene McClanahan entered the U.S Army on March 14, 1951. After his training, Private McClanahan was sent overseas on August 28, 1951, and was stationed in Yokohoma, Japan, where he served for seventeen months.

Private Walter Eugene Mc Clanahan died on August 28, 1952, when he drowned in the “Korean theater of war.” His body was later returned to the United States and he was buried with military honors at the Springfield cemetery on September 28, 1952.

He was survived by his wife, Mary Jane, and his daughter, Sharon, as well as his parents.
