Paul Hugo Kiewel was born August 10, 1925, in Iowa to Paul and Alma Kiewel. He had two sisters and two brothers. The family was living in Rapid City when his father died. His mother remarried and had three daughters. Paul attended Rapid City schools.

Paul first entered the service during World War II, circa 1941, and rose to the rank of technical sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. His unit saw action in several South Pacific Islands. His company was being deployed to Korea at the time of his death.

Technical Sergeant Paul H. Kiewel died on May 7, 1952, in a California Marine Base Hospital at Camp Joseph Pendleton. His body was returned to South Dakota and he was buried with military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

He was survived by his mother, his brothers, sisters, and half-sisters.
