George H. Richer was born October 25, 1932, at Jefferson, South Dakota, to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Richer. He lived most of his life in Jefferson, South Dakota, with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Richer. His siblings were Mary, Betty, Anna, Evelyn, Marcella, Bernard, and Raymond. George was educated in Jefferson-area schools.

On July 29, 1950, George Richer enlisted in the Army and was trained in the medical department at Camp Carson, Colorado, and in August of 1951 was transferred for duty at Ft. Benning, Georgia.

Corporal George H. Richer died on September 6, 1951, at the Ft. Benning Army Hospital. The paper said that he died “as a result of injuries suffered accidentally in the line of duty.”

The body of Corporal George Richer was returned to South Dakota and he was buried with military honors at St. Peter’s Church Cemetery.

Corporal Richer was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
