Irving Francis (Bud) Zachariasen was born in Avon, South Dakota, on March 18, 1918 to Mr. and Mrs. Zach Zachariasen. He had four brothers, Elden, Dale, Martin, and Leo, and four sisters, Zetta, Aves, Barbara, and Loretta. He came with his parents to Lake Andes, South Dakota in 1921, and attended school there, where he grew into a fine young man. He worked as a drayman for Zachariasen’s Dray, hauling mail and freight from 1945 until he entered the service. Irving married Arvellyn Jones on November 15, 1945, and two children, a daughter and a son, Lynn and Ray, were born to this union.

SSgt. Zachariasen served in the Armed Forces from 1940 to 1945 as a sergeant in charge of a motor pool in Iran. In 1951 he re-enlisted in the Air Corps and spent a year in Alaska during this enlistment. SSgt. Irving Zachariasen died of a heart attack in his sleep at the age of 36 at Carawell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas, on January 30, 1954. Irving was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

Funeral services were held at St. Marks Catholic Church in Lake Andes. Burial was made in the Lakeview Cemetery in Lake Andes. His brother and sister, and his daughter Lynn Zachariasen D’Amico, Tripp, South Dakota, and his son Ray Zachariasen Jordan, Corona, California, survive him.
