Arthur “Art” Bruinsma was born September 2, 1927, to Dirk and Ida (Franken) Bruinsma, at Sioux Center, Iowa. His family moved to South Dakota when Arthur was just a toddler. He was educated in Deuel County. His siblings were Jessie, Alvin, Bernard, Janet, Stephena, Lester, Eleanor, Delmar, Iva Mae, and Robert. Prior to entering the service, Arthur worked at Paul’s Chevrolet Sales and Service in Estelline. He married Dorothea Ruthe Elings on November 27, 1951, at Montevideo, Minnesota.

Arthur Bruinsma was drafted into the Army on February 19, 1951, at Sioux Falls and then was stationed at two posts in Washington before being sent overseas on December 8, 1951, to serve as an electrician with the engineers in the Philippines. Although his brother, Bob, was only a young boy at the time, he remembers that Arthur came home on a final furlough before leaving, and he remembers kissing Arthur goodbye. After going overseas, in May of 1952, Private First Class Bruinsma was transferred to duty with the military police and in internal security in Pusan, Korea.

While on guard duty in Korea, Private First Class Arthur Bruinsma was shot. He died of his wounds on June 27, 1952. His body was returned to the United States and he was buried with military honors at a cemetery in Seattle, Washington.

Bruinsma was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal. He was survived by his wife, his parents, five brothers, and five sisters.
